Dial Restoration – All Saints Church, Sherburn in Elmet, North Yorkshire
07/08/2014
Our clockmakers Terry & Peter recently completed the dial restoration at All Saints’ Church in Sherburn in Elmet. The task involved restoring two six foot diameter cast iron dials with a metal backplate.
Using roped access techniques, our IRATA qualified (Rope Access Qualification) clockmaker Terry approached the dials and removed the hands and dial motion works. He then began preparing the dial for restoration.
He then primed the dial with rust proofing primer and two coats of gloss. The numerals, minute marks, concentric rings, outer rim, and interior decoration were then gilded with 231/2 carat double thickness English gold leaf.
